Projects and Other Stuff

I always seem to have a few different things on the go, so I thought it would be a good idea to have a list of them somewhere.

I've been working with a free and open-source vector graphics application called Inkscape for quite some time now. It's a fantastic program for creating and editing graphics. I've submitted a few ideas for logos and graphics over the last little while. While some were more successful than others, they were all fun and let me flex my atrophied creative muscles a little bit.

In addition to the graphics themselves, a fellow Inkscaper, heathenx and myself have created screencasters.heathenx.org to host the Inkscape screencasts (video tutorials) we've created. If you're interested in seeing how Inkscape works, be sure to check it out. Also Inkscape related, I contributed a two-part podcast to Chess Griffin, giving a basic overview of Inkscape for his awesome Linux Reality podcast. You can check out Episode 82 and Episode 83 to hear yours truly stammer through it. ;)

Here's a list of interesting things I've worked on. I've always got something to do with graphics, photography or technology on my plate so I plan to keep updating this list as more things pop to the surface:

Screencasters

This is the site and blog where we host our Inkscape video tutorials. Think of a screencast as just a recording of whats happening on our screen plus narration. We take you through some fairly quick and simple tutorials to hopefully share some of our knowledge and ideas, and maybe inspire some of your own creativity. The homepage is at http://screencasters.heathenx.org. You can view or download the episodes there and also subscribe to our screencasters blog.

Linux Reality Graphic

Linux Reality is a great podcast hosted by Chess Griffin aimed at the new Linux user. I've learned a lot about Linux from this show. If you're interested in getting into Linux and open-source I highly recommend it. A while back, he petitioned his listeners to provide ideas for reworking his site's graphics. I made a few entries via his forums and it was actually through this discussion that I ran into heathenx (my compadre on the screencasters site). As luck would have it, Chess chose one of my entries (the puzzle piece logo) as the basis for some of his site's graphics. Needless to say it made my day. Here are some of the entries I came up with during that forum discussion:

Open Font Library Logo

The Open Font Library is a project whose goal is to collect public domain fonts so that they can be used freely. If you're looking for free (as in freedom) fonts, check out the site. And even more so, if you've created a font and want to share it with the world freely, please contribute there. Some time ago, they held a contest for a new logo. I submitted several entries and actually won! You can see the logo at the top of their site. Here are some of my entries:

Pantsland Logo

Brad Kellett is a blogger friend of mine from Sydney Australia. Brad is a web developer and an associate editor at MobileBurn a mobile phone news and review website. A little while ago he decided to rework his weblog and asked if I could come up with a logo idea for him. Here is the logo he decided to go with. You can check out Brad's blog at http://pantsland.com

TLLTS Banner Entries

The Linux Link Tech Show is a live-streamed internet radio show and podcast I've listened to for quite some time. A while back they asked for some banner ad ideas for some discussions they were having with Linux Journal magazine. I made a few entries in their forums, here are some of them:

Archlinux Logo Entries

Archlinux is a linux distribution that aims to be lightweight and flexible. Recently they announced a logo contest and I decided to create a few entries. I didn't end up winning but had fun participating. Here are my entries:

DebianJr Logo Entries

DebianJr is a project aimed at making the Debian Linux Distribution an OS aimed at children of all ages. During the spring of 07, they held a logo contest. This was a fun one even though I didn't end up winning. Here are a few of my entries:

Inkscape 0.45 About Screen Entries

Upon each release of a new version, Inkscape holds a contest for users to create an 'About' screen for the new version of the application. Here are a couple of my entries for the 0.45 version (none of which ended up winning):

Xmms2 Logo Entries

Xmms2 is an audio player for Linux and Unix-like systems. In the spring of 2007 they commissioned a logo contest. Like always I didn't end up winning ;) But here a few of my entries:
